HBO seems to be emulating Game of Thrones’ tale of vehement possessiveness; it has brought down a tiny empire of GOT fandom, ordering a Brooklyn bar to shut down its weekly Game of Thrones screenings.
Videology, a bar/rental store/screening room located on Bedford Ave. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, received a “very polite but official letter asking [them] to stop showing it.”
“As a pay subscription service, HBO should not be made available in public establishments,” the network said. “When it does happen, it is of particular concern when there is an attempt to profit off the programming. We have taken such actions for well over a decade.”
Wendy Chamberlain, owner of Videology, has said of the order “We are fully aware it’s their content, so we’re complying with it,” but also feels Videology is being discriminated against. The bar has shown the last four seasons of Game of Thrones with no problem and pays for their HBO subscription. There are also other bars in the area that show Game of Thrones every Sunday.
This order follows the leak of the first four episodes of Game of Thrones new and current season.
